Afternoon tea for the ladies

Every now and then, Anne will have a Board meeting here and she will combine it with afternoon tea. She sets the table with her finest tea ware, makes tea and coffee, and makes scones.

I get relegated to the back rooms. I have to stay out of the way for whole afternoon. It’s not a bad thing. I got brought a pot of tea, just for me. I haven’t had a real pot of tea in such a long time and it’s a real pleasure to have real tea again and not diluted teabag tea. And I occasionally get some of the goodies brought in to make my exile palatable.

But the best part is afterwards, when I get access to leftovers. Best of all is getting at the scones. Real home-made scones, with strawberry jam and whipped cream. The only downside is the strawberry jam. I told Anne to get imported jam, but no, she got the American product. American strawberry jam is corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, some other chemical muck and some chemical flavourings. If that stuff came near a strawberry any time in it’s making, I would be very surprised. It’s horrible muck, and you only eat if you don’t know better. It’s cheap. Best is imported strawberry jam, especially from Scotland. That stuff has no chemical muck in it, no corn syrup, no high fructose corn syrup, just good strawberries and real sugar. But enough of me whining about the completely ruined food industry in the USA.

The scones and cream were fabulous, the tea was wonderful, I got a lot done in my brief exile, and Anne got a chance to get out her finery and use it.

Love Anne’s china! My (very) British husband feels the same way about American jam as you, thankfully there is a British store not far from us where he can get his jam, bangers, crisps and chocolate at his heart’s desire.

Hi Becky. That’s just a small selection of her china. I keep finding boxes of it hidden all over the place. It’s good to get it out every now and then and put it together and make use of it. It does look pretty.

I can generally get good quality jams at Harris Teeter, but the range is limited. I love going to the little British stores that are quietly hiding around the place. I spend too much. Too much wonderful stuff to buy. And a lot of the British stores carry Australian products too. Tim Tams. Vegemite. I think I will stop in on the way home tonight and get some comfort foods from back home.
